A well with 10m inside diameter is dug 8.4 m deep. Earth taken out of it is spread all around it to a width of 7.5m to form an embankment. Find the height of the embankment.

SOLUTION
Diameter of the well = 10 m
∴ Radius (r) = 102= 5 m
Depth (h) = 8.4 m
∴ Volume of earth dug out = πr2h
=227×5×5×8.4m3=660m3
Width of embankment = 7.5 m
∴ Outer radius (R) = 5+7.5 = 12.5 m
Area of embankment = π(R2−r2)
= 227[(12.5)2−52]
= 227(12.5+5)(12.5−5)
= 227×17.5×7.5m2=412.5m2
Let h be the height of embankment, then
Voulme of embankment = 412.5 h = 660 ⇒h=660412.5m
∴412.5h=660⇒h=660412.5×hm3
⇒ h = 1.6019 m = 1.6 m
