A nozzle is a passage of varying cross-sectional area in which the potential energy of the steam is converted into kinetic energy.
The increase of velocity of the steam jet at the exit of the nozzle is obtained due to a decrease in enthalpy (total heat content) of the steam.
The nozzle is so shaped that it will perform this conversion of energy with minimum loss.
