Concept:

In stiffeness matrix method of analysis, the equilibrium equations are written by expressing the unknown joint displacements in terms of loads by using load- displacement relations. The unknown joint displacements are calculated by solving equilibrium equations. Therefore, the unknown quantities are displacements or rotations.

By using this method, both determinate and indeterminate structures can be analyzed. However, it is preferred in the case of indeterminate structures as such determinate structures can be analyzed by using simple equilibrium equations.

This method is adopted when the degree of kinematic indeterminacy is less than the static indeterminacy because no of equations required to be solved in this method are equal to its kinematic indeterminacy and less kinematic indeterminacy and hence, less will be the no of equation to be solved.
