SOLUTION
The corpus luteum plays an important role in the preparation of endometrium for the implantation of fertilised egg by secreting oestrogen and progesterone hormones. If the egg is not fertilised, then the corpus luteum degenerates and stops the production of progesterone and oestrogen hormones, which causes shedding of the endometrium lining with menstrual bleeding.
