SOLUTION

The term communication in Latin ‘communis’, means ‘to share’. It is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information through speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behaviour. Communication is broadly classified into two – verbal and non-verbal.

Verbal communication:

  • It is communication through words. This can occur in either of two modes, oral or written. Oral communication is more natural and spontaneous, and we use this mode most of the time. A great percentage of our communication is oral communication. But in formal situations, written communication is required. For example, letters. Thus, the letter is an example of verbal communication.

Non-Verbal Communication:

  • All communication that conveys a message need not be verbal. We can convey our feelings through a smile, a frown, or silence. Non-verbal communication is communication that is not conveyed through words. Albert Mehrabian, a professor of psychology, estimates that 55% of the impact of a message is through the non-verbal mode. Non-verbal communication may be visual or auditory. Symbols. signs, sounds, eye contact and facial expression, body postures, gestures, and physical appearance - all these constitute non-verbal communication.
  • A Grunt face expression may convey various negative emotions, including irritation, anger, and contempt. May also convey feelings of pride, dominance, and empowerment.
  • Emoticons are emojis used on various social networking sites. Emoticon as the name suggests is a tool to express emotion (e.g. sad/happy/perplexed, etc.). Just like nonverbal communication, the inception of emoticons was conceptualized to replace non-linguistic information (e.g. Facial Expression) during one to one meeting and as emoticons serve the purposes of Nonverbal Communication, it can be acknowledged as Nonverbal Communication Tool.
  • Emoticons provide distinct emotive cues and also transfer emotions which are only present in Nonverbal Communication. Emoticons are such a valuable form of nonverbal communication that different teams of neuroscientists have studied the reactions they trigger in the human brain. All studies came to pretty much the same conclusion: emoticons triggered strong activity in the brain area connected to processing emotions, even though they would trigger no response in the brain area connected to recognizing human faces.
  • In other words, people are able to read the emotions conveyed by emoticons while being aware of the fact that they do not represent real human faces. Thus, even though emoticons are sent on social networking sites by way of typing, they are as considered as a non-verbal tool of communication as we are able to interpret the feeling of other people without him calling it out verbally which is a major feature of Non-Verbal Communication.
  • Sighing is a type of long, deep breath. We often associate sighs with feelings such as relief, sadness, or exhaustion. That sigh when an exam is cleared after working hard on it depicts to other people that you have been successful even without you explicitly stating it.
